In the City of Hendersonville, the Public Works Department stays busy maintaining over 300 miles
of roads, including cleaning, paving, and storm water projects. Road Superintendent Trace Buerkett
says the Department’s new Cat 303.5 mini excavator and Cat 420F2 backhoe loader are proving to be
ideal for their ongoing work as well as for a major infrastructure improvement initiative.
“We have a good deal of outdated infrastructure, including a lot of old corrugated pipe,” Buerkett
reports. “We are working to replace all the old pipe, and these smaller Cat machines are great for
this. We’re replacing corrugated pipe every time we pave.”
A big factor in adding the Cat machines to the Department’s fleet is their greater versatility, Buerkett
explains. “The 303.5 can maneuver in tight spaces between houses. The rubber-tired 420F2 self-
travels easily; plus, it can ditch right from the side of the road. Its thumb is great when we’re working
on driveways – it can pick up and move large pieces of the old driveway.
