SEATTLE By Klair Kimmey
PWX19: Strong Program in Seattle
The Tennessee Chapter was well
represented on the West coast at PWX this
year. Around thirty members and spouses
(and two of Tennessee’s best equipment
operators) attended the Seattle event
September 8-11.
Attendees were from all over the United
States, Canada and other parts of the globe.
The opportunity to speak with Public
Works professionals from outside Tennessee
was educational in itself. Networking
opportunities made it clear that industry
leaders are facing similar issues, no matter
where they are in the world.
Each morning of the four-day event was
kicked off with a keynote speaker, featuring
topics including homelessness, diversity,
long-range strategizing, and secrets for
increasing productivity and innovation.
More than 125 technical and professional
development sessions were held on multiple
topics – at least three of which were taught
by Tennessee Chapter representatives.
The Equipment Roadeo featured two
events on Mini Excavators. Our operators,
Matt Moore, Clarksville, and Mike Ribaudo,
Metro Nashville, gave it their best shot.
While it was a bit damp and crowded,
everyone seemed to have a good time.
The trade show was huge – almost 80,000
square feet of exhibit space! After walking
through what I thought was the entire show,
I found another room just as large behind it.
For those interested in learning about new
equipment and technology, this was the place
to be.
At Monday evening’s Awards Ceremony,
Tennessee representatives took the stage to
receive the PACE Award again this year. Only
a small number walked across the stage, but
they were cheered by what sounded like a
crowd of fans in the audience.
Tuesday evening was reserved for Chapter
dinners. Thanks to Kimberly Strong,
Chattanooga, for coordinating the Tennessee
Chapter gathering at The Road House. About
28 folks showed up for fabulous food and
great company and of course, a photo op.
PWX wrapped up on Wednesday with
most folks heading home. Some had the
opportunity to stay a little longer and enjoy
whale watching, site seeing, hiking, dining,
shopping and more. Seattle has a lot to offer.
In 2020, PWX will be in New Orleans.
That should be interesting.
