“It’s good, dependable equipment”

The Jefferson County Highway Department provides maintenance for all county roads, issues
new driveway permits, works with builders, paving companies, and trucking companies to assure
safe conditions on county roads. Five crews made up of forty-eight employees carry out the daily
functions of the Jefferson County Highway Department. Among these employees are Tony Lane,
Joe Patterson, Ronnie Lyle, Dwight Bayless, Billy Layman, Kris Tipton, Jeremiah Baker, and Charles Permit No. 592 Pontiac, IL PAID US Postage PRSRT STD
H. Tipton, pictured above. The highway department maintains around 703 miles of road in Jefferson
County. They have recently re-built several roads in the county. They pride themselves in having
their own paving operation, asphalt plant, and quarry. Over the years, their organization has grown
and accumulated a variety of new Caterpillar equipment in order to increase their efficiency and

ability to provide safe road conditions in Jefferson County.

Their Cat fleet consists of a 918F, 320N, 12F, 248B, 420E, 924K, 320E, CB10, 289D3, and 306. They
most recently added the 289D3 and 306 to their fleet and are pleased with the smooth operation
of these new machines. Charles H. Tipton, Superintendent of the Jefferson County Highway
Department, spoke highly of their fleet of Caterpillar equipment. When asked why he purchased
Cat equipment, Tipton stated, “It’s good, dependable equipment. Parts are available just down the
road from us.” He emphasized that some of their machines were purchased in the 1960s and are still
running excellently. Tipton and his team are pleased with their line of Cat equipment and the support
they receive from their local dealer network.
