Middle Branch Meets in Nashville TCAPWA EVENTS AND HIGHLIGHTS
By Rocky Robinson
The Middle Branch held its fourth
and final meeting of 2018 on Thursday,
December 13th. The meeting was held
at Metro Nashville’s East Center facility
located at 983 Dr. Richard Adams Drive.
The focus of this Branch meeting was all
about new product demonstration.
Approximately 30 members and
guests were treated to a luncheon of deli
sandwiches, salads, and desserts from
Newk’s Deli. The purpose of this product
demonstration was to learn about a
new asphalt product that minimizes
labor and curing time. MegaPatch was
created as an R&D project by Polycon
International LLC, a 20-year-old
Mississippi company specializing in
polymer composite overlays. In 2007,
they attempted to create a durable, non-
bituminous, pothole repair material. The
original formula was a success, but it took
over three hours to cure for traffic. In
2012, Polycon introduced a component
that would significantly accelerate the
polymer composite cure time, allowing
immediate traffic. In order to offer a
five-year warranty, the new formulation
had to be tested in various conditions
for a period of five years to assure that
the product would last. For reference,
MegaPatch is a new-to-market, patent-
pending polymer powder that, when
mixed with water for 60-90 seconds,
delivers a pothole patching material that
is “traffic ready” in 15 minutes or less. The
process allows for small-batch, jobsite
mixing (cold application) and the product
does not involve any asphalt, bitumen,
oil, fumes, odor, etc. Using MegaPatch
is easy, clean, environmentally friendly,
and can be utilized even in colder winter
temperatures. In addition, the resistance
to UV/water/freeze-thaw/chemicals is the
basis for the 5-year warranty (Polycon
anticipates the material will have an
8-year+ lifespan). Among the many other
advantages is the fact that MegaPatch
can be milled. The crew worked several
potholes for attendees to view the product.
They put on a very good demonstration
for all the members and guests.
The Middle Branch would like to thank
everyone for attending. We would also
like to send a special thank you to Whit
Hughes, CEO of MegaPatch Industries
for sponsoring this meeting and for their
support of TCAPWA.
