Alfred Lewis, Collierville, was recently Sanitation division.
presented with the 2019 Murphy
Snoderly Award, named for Murphy
Snoderly, a long-time engineering
and public works consultant for the
University of Tennessee Municipal
Technical Advisory Service. Snoderly
felt that the working person, the man
or woman who day in and day out picks
up garbage, patches streets or performs
dozens of other chores at a relatively
low pay scale, should be recognized for
dedication and service to the community.
The following is the transcript of Lewis’
nomination from the town of Collierville.

Alfred Lewis
I would like to nominate Mr. Alfred
Lewis for the 2019 Murphy Snoderly
Award, for his outstanding service and
dedication to our community serving as
a sanitation worker in the Collierville

Lewis has worked with the town of
Collierville Sanitation Division for the
past twenty one years as a sanitation
worker on a rear loading garbage truck.
As a sanitation worker, Lewis performs
his daily sanitation duties collecting
solid waste materials that include bagged the items set out at the curb the previous
grass, bagged leaves, garage clean-out
materials and other related solid-waste
materials from approximately 15,400
collections stops on a weekly basis.
During the performance of his duties
Lewis works outside in all types of
inclement weather. Regardless of the
weather Lewis always comes to work on
time with a smile and never complains.
Throughout the years, Lewis has been
the recipient of multiple safety awards
and received numerous compliments
from our residents that show his
dedication to customer service and

attention to detail. One of his most recent
compliments was from a resident who
had grass bags at the curb spilling over
with grass and garage clean-out materials
scattered beyond the curb in the grass.
Lewis collected all the scattered items
from the yard and following collection of
the grass bags took the time to seep the
area around the curb leaving no trace of
evening.
In addition to his superior
performance and work ethic, Lewis rarely
ever misses a day of work and has been
maxed out on his vacation and sick time
for several years.
In addition to his daily collection
duties and due to his extensive
knowledge of his job and the sanitation
routes, Lewis also trains new sanitation
workers and shows new drivers how to
run the various collection routes.
