Monroe County’s road network stretches nearly 800 miles across 635 square miles—making it one of
the largest counties in Tennessee by area. Overseeing the maintenance and improvement of this vast
infrastructure is the Monroe County Highway Department, led by Superintendent Steve Teague and
      Assistant Superintendent William Odell.
Teague brings nearly three decades of experience in transportation, including 12 years with the
Tennessee Department of Transportation and the past 15 years with Monroe County. Since taking on
the superintendent role, he has led efforts to modernize operations, upgrade equipment, and ensure Permit No. 592 Pontiac, IL PAID US Postage PRSRT STD
that the department continues to meet the needs of a growing and diverse county.
The department’s 35 employees are divided into six crews, responsible for a wide range of services
including paving, mowing, signage, snow and debris removal, and emergency repairs. From busy
corridors like Old Highway 68, which sees over 2,000 vehicles per day, to quiet rural roads, the team
works year-round to keep Monroe County’s roads safe and reliable.
Recent infrastructure projects have included the replacement of major culverts on Bell Town Road,
Old Bell Town Road, and Wiggins Road—improvements that are vital for long-term road stability and
      drainage in the region.
To stay efficient and productive, the department regularly invests in updated equipment. Among their
most recent additions are a Cat 908 compact wheel loader and a Cat 262D3 skid steer loader. Teague
chooses Caterpillar equipment for its proven dependability, as well as the convenience of accessible
      service, parts, and on-site demonstrations.
With dedicated leadership, experienced staff, and a commitment to staying current, the Monroe
County Highway Department continues to deliver essential services that keep the county connected
      and moving forward.
