In Giles County, Tennessee, the Highway Department fleet includes both older and new Cat Permit No. 592
machines – all of which are in use nearly every day. Two 1990s-vintage Cat 140G graders and a
newly-purchased Cat 140 stay busy almost daily, as do two recently-added 420F2 backhoe loaders,
and an older 926 wheel loader and 963 track loader.
Road Superintendent Barry Hyatt says there is a lot of ongoing work on the county’s 1,100+ miles of
road. “We bush-hog regularly, maintain a regular cycle of cutting along the roads, patch the roads,
trim trees, and typically lay our own pipes to make sure our specifications are met.”
He points out that the new 140 grader and 420F backhoe loaders were purchased utilizing the State
of Tennessee Multi-Year Contract.
Shop Foreman Bob Jarratt comments, “You can’t find fault with Cat machines. And the parts and
service support we get from our Cat Dealer is a big selling point for us. We just pick up the phone
and we have just about anything we need by the next morning.”
